Comparison Chart of Three of the Best Suburbs of Chicago
Hinsdale, Western Springs and Clarendon Hills are three of the most sought after villages in the near western suburbs of Chicago. They share many primary characteristics.

All are train towns with idyllic-looking downtowns. All have excellent schools. All have an extremely low crime rate. All have charming tree-lined streets. The commute to downtown Chicago and both airports is very convenient. Hinsdale has three train stations. Western Springs and Clarendon Hills each have one Metra depot.
These three villages are so small that if you live in one, you will certainly be associated with the other two. For example, my family and I live in this area. Our ice cream shop (Oberwies) is in Western Springs. Our favorite local Italian restaurant is in Clarendon Hills (Skapa Italian Kitchen) while our wine shop is in Hinsdale (Hinsdale Wine Shop). These are small towns-almost neighborhoods as opposed to towns.
While there is not a bad choice among the three, there are some inherent differences.
- Hinsdale has the highest average home prices (over $1,300,000) compared to $700,000 in both Western Springs and Clarendon Hills. All towns have homes where the high end is in excess of $2,000,000.
- Hinsdale and Clarendon Hills are serviced by the Hinsdale Central High School District whereas Western Springs is in the jurisdiction of Lyons Township High School. Both are considered excellent schools, but they differ in curriculum and feeder schools.
- Western Springs is entirely in Cook County. Clarendon Hills is entirely in DuPage County. Hinsdale is approximately 90% in DuPage County and 10% on Cook County. These differences have political and real estate tax consequences.
One of the most prudent methods for determining which is right for you is to have a true insider give you a personal overview of each town and mini neighborhoods within each town. After you learn what you are looking at, only then will some on-your-own research become meaningful to you.
